Dorothy, We Are Not In Kansas Anymore
The last few days have been a transition for me. I got a new job opportunity (yay!), and that meant having to drive into the office (boo!).
What it also meant, was that I had to get serious about time management. I enjoy freelancing, and I plan to continue doing it. But now I have a primary commitment to work at a large tech company, and that means prioritization.
My number one priority? Become a better developer. That is partly being taken care of by the fact that my full time work is developing test software. But I don’t want to be defined by a job. I want to be something all my own. And that means continuing to grow on my own, as I had been doing prior to starting this opportunity.
This has required me to set up work nights at home. That means, that these evenings are set aside for me to work at my home office on freelance work, or personal projects. In my effort to build up a rhythm to my life I felt that designating time was an important step. Just as important, fun nights. As you can guess, these are evenings when the point is just to have some fun.
What this also means for me is that weekends tend to lean more toward scheduled time. This includes time to go grocery shopping and cook for the week. Which by the way, pre-preparing my dinners and freezing them has been a lifesaver. It guarantees a home cooked, nutritious meal for me to look forward to after a long commute home.
Mostly, this new working opportunity has really forced me into the role of developer. This is significant because although I already felt like a developer, that was in my new life. In this role, I am in effect going back to a version of my old life, but in new clothes (literally, cause I love wearing t-shirts and sneakers on the daily). I am sure that there will be more to come from this as time goes on, but I felt the need to mark the transition.
I have graduated to a freelance developer with so much work that they have to schedule their time. For me, that is a big step.
